A Time to Stitch 8 – Challenge Reveal!

It’s that time again!

Christine and Therese have issued another blog hop challenge!

I signed up on a whim, despite having never made a bag or purse of any sort before. For some crazy reason, I though single-drop peyote would be the best stitch for this project, so I have only finished the pouch portion at this stage.

DSC01065

It is big enough to hold a few credit cards, an ID, and a few folded up bills.

DSC01069

I plan to add a flap of some sort to the top, with some sort of fastener to keep your goodies safe. And then I’ll need to add straps. I’m thinking about just stitching on some D-Rings to the sides, so that I can trade out straps between leather purse straps or something beaded or a chain. I haven’t quite made up my mind yet.

The colors were inspired by these gorgeous pieces I got from Petra Carpreau of Scorched Earth on Etsy. They were actually all freebies from various orders I have placed with her and apparently, she has guessed my taste perfectly.

DSC01070

I haven’t quite decided on placement. I know I want the button somewhere on the flap, but the dangles might hang off of the flap or off the bottom of the purse. They’re ceramic, so luckily they’re really lightweight, since this purse is already really heavy.

DSC01072  DSC01071

So, it isn’t finished, but I have been working really hard on this thing and I am very proud of it. I love the colors and the design (especially how those chevrons turned out!).

DSC01068

I will definitely post an update with pictures when I finish the darned thing. In the mean time, check out what everyone else has made!

Bead Soup!

I know I have been flooding you guys with new patterns lately. I do, in fact, have another one coming up soon, but it isn’t quite ready yet. In the meantime, I thought I’d whip up a little post about a stash-busting tool I love – making BEAD SOUP!

P1060078

So, about a year ago, I spring-cleaned my bead stash and found at least twenty tubes of seed beads that were almost empty. I decided to mix them all together in a few color groups to make bead soup. I left them separated by size, though, so I could still use them in my usual bead weaving patterns. My twenty-something almost-empty tubes became three tubes of mixed colors!

I made a mix of golds and whites and made this.
P1060051

I made a peach mix and made this –

P1060275

And then I made a blue mix that I absolutely loved and made a whole bunch of things.

So, there’s not much point to this post, besides sharing some pictures. But making bead soup can be a really great way to clean out your seed bead stash and can really jazz up your favorite old patterns with a fresh, multi-colored look.

So, dig through your stash and combine your almost-empty tubes. Maybe the new colors will inspire you!

New Design – Barcelona Bracelet

Hello, friends!

Aside from my Two Years Cuff, most of my bracelet designs are pretty slim. I like making narrow designs because I think they are easier to wear and stack (and, let’s be real, they are so much quicker to make). But this time I went all out on a big, brash cuff.

Remember two posts back when I teased this materials photo as a hint for my newest project?
DSC00923

Originally, I picked out this selection of beads for a blog hop challenge hosted by Art Jewelry Elements. Eventually, I did something entirely different for that project, but I loved this color combination, so I set it aside for later. Trying to make a bracelet with those lovely Jasper beads and the halo finish Czech fire-polished crystals eventually led me to make this enormous cuff.

DSC00958

It is much bigger than what I usually design (the Jasper beads are 8mm, so the cuff is a touch over an inch wide), but I really like the look of it. Here’s a few more color combinations I’ve done.

DSC01007 DSC00971

If it is too big for your taste, never fear! You can downsize the bracelet by use one size smaller of each of the materials, without having to change any of the instructions at all. I include all of that information in my pattern, which I sell in the Patterns / Tutorials section of my etsy shop.

Oh, and were you wondering about the name? I just happened across this gorgeous photo put out by AirPano. They took it from a helicopter and it just stole my breath away.

Those rounded squares reminded me just enough of my bracelet that I named it after the gorgeous city in the photograph: Barcelona.

I don’t have another design in my mind yet, but I have lots of pretty beads in new shapes and colors to glean inspiration from, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that something new will come to me soon.  Wish me luck and Happy Beading!

New Design – Dainty Duo Drops!

Hello, dear friends!

I am happy to announce that I have finally escaped from a whole summer of terrible designer’s block. From about April to August, I have been completely devoid of new design ideas or even motivation to play with new beads. I tried all sorts of things to kick-start my muse, but I think a few outside stresses from my personal life were just completely smooshing my creativity.

But fear not! I have escaped the doldrums and am ready to present you with a brand new earring pattern – my Dainty Duo Drops!

Click me for the pattern!

Click the photo for the pattern!

These drops are a reincarnation of an old pattern than mine that I think is far more sophisticated (and versatile!) in this form. This pattern allows you to use ANY drop bead for the bottom as long as it is drilled side-to-side and that means the silhouette changes drastically depending on your individual bead choices!

Here, I’ve got two fairly wide earrings that both used Czech pear-shaped drops. DSC00912      DSC00907

Then I have a much slimmer version with dagger beads and one with a Czech petal drop.

DSC00869      DSC00865

And then if you wanna get really fancy you can use faceted crystal drop beads like I did in these sets.

DSC00962      DSC00877

This pair with briolettes shows how you can go all out for something snazzy, but the pattern also includes instructions on how to make a drop-less pair like the second photo.

DSC00941       DSC00007

I’ve gotta say, I am VERY relieved to have escaped my creative doldrums and finally had a bit of a break through. In fact, I have been SO productive that I already have TWO more new designs completely and am in the process of making their patterns. I don’t want to show pictures until the patterns are ready, but I can give you two hints!

The bracelet/earring pattern I will be releasing later in September features Pip beads!

DSC00923

And the pattern I have in the works for October was made using some of these leftovers from August’s Component of the Month challenge!

Those hints are all you get for now. Stay tuned for more updates and new patterns!
Happy beading!

AJE August Component of the Month Reveal!

My luck just never seems to run out! I was randomly chosen once again to participate in the Art Jewelry Elements blog’s August Component of the Month challenge.  (You may recall that I was also chosen back in January. You can read about that wonderful experience here.)

I was lucky enough to receive this gorgeous component from Diana Ptaszynski of Suburban Girl Studios. The colors were randomly sent out, but I got the exact shade I wanted!

DSC00904

Isn’t it lovely?

So, when I first got a look at this pendant, I immediately ran to my stash of seed beads. I grabbed a handful of 11/0’s that coordinated and found some perfect jasper beads and even complimentary Czech glass beads and Rizos.

DSC00923

Unfortunately, my muse was being completely contrary. Nothing I tried worked! I wasted a significant part of my month trying out different types of twisted herringbone, assorted braids, and even straight up stringing, but nothing was working.

I decided to go back to the AJE blog and look for inspiration. My attention was immediately captured by all the lovely mixed media pieces. I put my carefully selected bead palette away (don’t worry, I will revisit that color combo later), and pulled out my ribbons and chains.

I started with taking some sari silk, silk ribbons, and matte chain and did a Lark’s head knot on the coin pendant and took it from there.

DSC00925

I did a bunch of braiding and then added the drop with some REALLY messy wire wrapping (I cannot do wire work to save my life), so I covered in up with more sari silk.

I don’t think the end result is too bad after all!

DSC00924DSC00928 DSC00932 DSC00931 DSC00930

It is definitely far out of my comfort zone, but isn’t that the point of these challenges? I will probably never abandon my precious seed beads, but it’s nice to know that I can still make something nice out of fabric and chain and a bit of blood and tears. Haha.

Thanks again to the AJE team for letting me participate in this beading adventure! Please take the time to hop around to the other blogs to see what everyone made with Diana’s gorgeous stoneware pendants!

Ravenclaw Custom Work

Hello, friends! One of the reasons I have not been designing much lately is that I have been working on custom work. Generally, I am not super keen on custom work, as it usually means making something that you have already made before (which I find pretty boring), but with one teeny tiny change, like color or size. I definitely want to make my customers happy, but there’s usually not much room for imagination or creativity.

Not so in this case!

My friend asked me if it would be possible to make a set of Ravenclaw bracelets for her and some friends. For those of you who are not familiar, Ravenclaw is a house in the Harry Potter books. They value intelligence, wit, and a love of learning. In the book, their official house colors are bronze and blue (they changed it in the movie to silver and blue, which I think was a very poor decision) and their animal symbol is a golden eagle.

I had my friend glance through my etsy shop to see if anything caught her eye and she chose my Diadem design for the basic shape. (Those of you who are Harry Potter savvy may remember that the Diadem of Ravenclaw was an important artifact in the last book!)
With a few more tweaks and some customization, I made these three bracelets!

DSC00888a DSC00889 DSC00891DSC00890

The charms that I added are a feather (to represent the Ravenclaw eagle) and a Deathly Hallows symbol charm (also from the last Harry Potter book). I used lobster claws so that I could add an extension chain and make the bracelets a bit adjustable.

For my fellow beaders out there, I do have a tutorial for this bracelet design, which can be found here. Also, these are the Silky beads that I used. They turned out just lovely framed in bronze.

All in all, I am VERY excited with how these bracelets turned out. It was a great custom work experience!

Birthdays and Bead Boards

Hello, darlings!

Firstly, I must apologize from being absent from my blog for so long. July has been an absolute whirlwind of craziness in my personal life and I have been stuck in the creative doldrums as far as my beading work goes. I’ve been working on some custom pieces that haven’t required much imagination and the other project is not quite ready to be blogged about. So, it’s hard to blog about your beading when you don’t have much to share.

One of things that kept me so busy in July, however, was my birthday on the 4th (yes, I’m a July 4th baby. Go ahead and make your firecracker jokes now). I celebrated with my friends at my local bead store (Beaded Bliss) and they surprised me with a fantastic birthday gift.

DSC00859

That’s right! They all chipped in and got me a Bead On It Board! Isn’t it beautiful

So, I had heard about these things from my bead ladies and a few of them had even become a wee bit addicted to stock piling them (yes, I am talking about you, J). I had admired them, petted the soft material, and oohed and aahed over the sturdy design and soft edges. I did not, however, ever think that I would actually buy one. I told myself that as long as never used one and spoiled myself, I would still be happy with the bead mats that I had always used. I mean, Bead On It Boards are expensive.

However, I have pretty much just fallen in love with this thing. Mine is a smaller size, which I like since I often use while sitting cross-legged on the couch. It’s the perfect size for working on a single project. It’s heavy, durable, and so very, VERY soft.

DSC00862 DSC00860 DSC00861 DSC00858

Plus! When you pour your beads onto the mat and then tap the sides, the beads DO turn hole up. I was skeptical, but it is true!

My ladies also got me a casserole dish carrier, which allows me to carry the board upright. It is a drastic improvement over my last set up, which involved a Bath and Body Works bag.

DSC00857 DSC00863

All in all, I am super grateful to my ladies for getting these lovely presents for me. I love my Bead On It Board and highly recommend them. Check and see if your local bead store can get them in and if not, you can look into them here. They are expensive, but it’s a nice luxury to have. There are no corners to catch your thread and the materials are really nice.

I am thrilled!  Thanks again, ladies!

And for all my lovely blog readers out there, I promise to begin blogging with regularity again soon. Life has been a bit of a kick in the pants lately, but I’m about ready to start kicking back. See you soon with some new beading news!

A Time to Stitch 7 Embroidery Challenge – Reveal!

Hello, friends! It’s time once again for another Time to Stitch challenge from Christine and Therese! This time the challenge is to explore bead embroidery!

I have some experience with bead embroidery, but it definitely a weak spot in my beadweaving arsenal. Generally, I find that my stitching ends up looking kinda sloppy and I am TERRIBLE about keeping things symmetrical. Here are a few examples of embroidery pieces I have made in the past. They’re certainly not awful, but they’re just a bit… messy for my taste.

Exotic Fantasy Beaded RingDragon's Stone Beaded Necklace

The freeform construction of these pieces are completely counter intuitive to me. Off-loom beadweaving, which I almost exclusively do and write patterns for, is like building with Lego blocks. It’s construction and building and fitting shapes together. Bead embroidery is more like painting or sketching, both things that I have never been any good at. But what better way to practice and improve than with this ATTS challenge?

I ended up making a hair barrette with some leftover cabs I found in my stash. I want to say that the pink stones are Rhodonite, but I have no clue about the pale green stone in the center.

DSC00804

I’ll admit, I’m a little embarrassed to post pictures of this piece, because it really isn’t up to my standards. The stitching is sloppy and I don’t like how the color scheme ended up. But, like I said, I need to practice if I want to get better. And I am proud of how clean the back of the piece and the barrette look. Usually, I get glue everywhere, but this actually looks nice!

DSC00802DSC00803

So, all in all, it was a learning experience and I am ready to keep trying and improving!

I am a Miyuki Snob

I am a stubborn, unrepentant Miyuki snob (who isn’t being paid for this post – I promise). The kind of beadweaving that I do requires the seed beads that I use to be consistent, not only within a given tube, but across their assorted finishes and sizes. The structure of most of my patterns require beads that snap together like perfect building blocks.

Most people would shrug and say, “Geez, Sam. That’s fine. Just be sure to use Japanese seed beads.” But they would be wrong, I tell you! Not all Japanese seed beads are created equal. I bring before you two bracelets made from the same pattern (my Tracery Trinket pattern), with the same Silky beads (Chalk Luster Light Green), but different seed beads.

DSC00609DSC00600

The bracelet on the left uses silver Miyuki beads. Note that they make crisp corners and sharp diamond shapes, as intended.

The bracelet on the right was made the exact same way, but the lines are far less streamlined and the whole thing looks a big more jumbled.

DSC00273DSC00344

Here’s another pattern (my Diadem bracelet) with the same issue, The one on the left has nice, smooth seed beads that sit in their rows as requested.

On the right, however, the seed beads are obviously inconsistent in size. It doesn’t upset the lay of the bracelet too much, but it is noticeable.

Both of the right side bracelets are Toho seed beads and both of the left side bracelets are Miyuki. While both are consistent enough to work with, the Toho seed beads are always larger than the Miyuki seed beads, even though all are supposed to be round 11/0’s. My frustration with Toho’s slight engorgement is that it keeps certain patterns from coming out properly. And when the results are compared side-by-side, Toho just doesn’t cut it.

That being said, I do own several tubes of Toho beads. You may well accuse me of hypocrisy, but I must defend myself. Until now, Toho beads have been the only brand of the two to carry Picasso finish seed beads in 11/0’s. And I, as a completely devotee of Picasso beads, have softened my staunch snobbery to allow these Toho beads into my stash.

Darn you beautiful beads!

However! My boss (who owns Beads Direct USA) has let me in on a secret – Beadsmith is finally making Picasso finish Miyuki 11/0’s available!  She said we’ll be buying a whole bunch the moment they are available to us. I am utterly overjoyed and look forward to having a seed bead stash entirely stocked with Miyuki beads. My Miyuki snobbery will know no bounds.

So, what about you guys? Do you have any brands that you are snobby about? Any particular tools or favorite suppliers? Leave a comment below and we can all be snobs together.

Update 6/12/15: Linda Genaw of Crafty Inspirations by Linda (a wonderful blog you should ALL be following) wrote her own post about her trouble with Toho beads and it has lots of gorgeous example photos. You can find here post HERE.
