A Handy Guide to Giving Jewelry as Gifts

Hello, loves! I am currently having a big spring sale with the hope of clearing out some of my inventory to make room for some wonderful new stuff. This is a great time of year for sales because there is SO much gift-giving in the early spring and summer!

Let’s see, there’s graduation, Mother’s Day, spring birthdays, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, and (in my family, at least) about a bajillion birthdays.

So, as many beaders do, I find my self giving a LOT of jewelry as gifts and have come up with a few handy tips for gifting jewelry.

#1 Size

Obviously, making sure a piece of jewelry fits is going to be really important. Bracelets in particular are really fussy with size. Your best bet is to enlist the aid of someone living with the giftee and have them measure a bracelet that the giftee wears often. That way, you’ll know what size they like to wear, instead of just having a wrist measurement.

It is often safer to buy them a necklace or earrings, since is size is less of an issue there. A long necklace can fit a much wider variety of people than a seven inch bracelet, even with an extension chain. And as long as your giftee has pierced ears, you can’t get the wrong size of earrings.

#2 Clasps

Be sure that your giftee can use the type of clasp on the piece of jewelry you want to gift. Lots of people struggle with lobster claws and toggles and therefore prefer magnets, but then you risk them losing a one of a kind piece.

You also want to make sure they don’t have metal allergies. Your friend may love the beaded bracelet you made her, but if the base metal clasp gives her a rash, she’ll probably never wear it.

#3 Style

I know it’s hard to imagine, but some people just do not wear jewelry. That doesn’t mean that you cannot give them a handmade gift! In the past, I have made bookmarks, keychains, and rear-view mirror dangles for my non-jewelry-wearing friends.

You also want to pay attention to what kind of jewelry your giftee wears. Some women will not wear heavy or long earrings. Others prefer chokers to long looped necklaces. Giving a chunky cuff to your dainty-wristed friend who only wears delicate chains is not going to go over well. Be sure to observe your giftee (or glance through their facebook photos) to see what style jewelry they wear most often.

And don’t forget to think about colors! My mom, for example, pretty much only wears silver jewelry. She’ll take a pop of color here or there, but if i make her something in gold or  (my favorite) bronze, she’ll admire it kindly and set it on her jewelry rack, with every intention of finding the perfect top to match. Then, she’ll never wear it and I’ll never see it again.

All in all, giving jewelry as a gift is a great way to utilize your craft and bless your loved ones with something one-of-a-kind and special. But, be sure that you’re really thinking through what will work best for your friend. Be as choosy as they would be if they got to pick the jewelry out themselves! The extra thoughtfulness will make your gift all the more precious.

Enjoy the spring gift-giving season, dear beaders! And remember use the code “Spring16” during checkout to get 20% off anything my etsy shop (including finished jewelry and patterns) until June 1st.

Till next time!

Spring Cleaning Sale!

Woo. I just barely made my two-post-a-month goal this month. I’m already slipping on my resolution and it’s only March! This is NOT a good sign.

Lucky for you guys, though,  I have decided to motivate myself to post by announcing a big spring sale!
Spring16 copyMy wonderful mother decided to purchase me some ad space in the play program for my old high school’s rendition of Oklahoma this year. (My littlest sister is really involved in the drama program there and my mother is the Prop Finder Extraordinaire, so it was very sweet of them to think of me while up to their ears in gingham and wicker props).

So, I decided to indulge in a big spring sale to lure in new customers and whipped up this little ad. It’s not super fancy, but teens like flower earrings, right? Right??

(I have NO idea what teens like these days.)

Spring is a great time for a big jewelry sale. Nearly every one is going to need to be buying gifts, what with Mother’s Day and a bajillion graduation parties to attend. It’s a popular time for wedding anniversaries and engagement parties. And it is the perfect weather for trading in our fluffy scarves and gloves for sparkling new jewelry!

So, until June 1st (that’s right – this sale code is going to be valid for TWO MONTHS), everything in my shop will be 20% off if you use the code “Spring16” during checkout. This includes finished jewelry AND patterns, so feel free to load up on patterns and make your own gifts for the season.

Here’s a reminder of how to use coupon codes-

I blurred out the details for privacy, but that little heart Pendant is from THEAelements on etsy and she does lovely work.

So, yeah, lovely spring sale! Feel free to indulge and help me clear out my shelves for some new spring inspiration. I really want to move this inventory to make room for some great new stuff.

Ooh, and while I’ve got your attention – I’ve been thinking about writing up a list of tips for buying jewelry as gifts for other people, so if you have any advice or tips, please leave them in the comments.

And don’t forget – “Spring16” to get 20% off everything and anything in my shop.

Yay Spring!

New Design – The Backsplash Bracelet and Earrings

Hello, darling beaders!

I am so happy to introduce my newest design – the Backsplash Bracelet!

il_570xn-990100711_sq39

So, I was puttering around my bead room and noticed the pile of Tango bead tubes that have been sitting in the “new-shapes-that-have-stumped-me-so-far” pile and pulled them out to admire them again. I had been wanting to design something with Tango beads for SO long, but nothing I tried seemed to work out.

I arranged them in a little square and thought, “Huh. That little square would frame a silky bead perfectly. There’s no way that would work up as prettily as I image it would. The Tangos wouldn’t fit.”

Well, my friends, the Tangos fit! I am so in love with this design. I love the geometric tile look and how many different styles you can achieve just by switching up the colors and finishes you use.

il_570xn-990100869_dqlw

I did discover that it is important to use Miyuki seed beads for the little seed bead frames. Non-Japanese seed beads are not uniform enough and Toho 11/0’s are actually slightly bigger than Miyuki 11/0’s and tend to make things jumbled (as I grumbled about in this post).

I have also had several people ask me about where they can find the beads for this pattern, since lots of brick-and-mortar places don’t have all the bajillion two-hole beads that have been coming out lately. If you’re in the Cincinnati area, I know that Beaded Bliss has them and the Bead Stash will be carrying them soon for my Dayton babes. For my non-Ohio friends, I recommend the online bead shop (where I work) Beads Direct USA.

For you locals, I will be teaching this pattern at the Bead Stash on May 22nd, so clear your calendars! And don’t despair if you can’t make it to Dayton, the pattern is already available on my etsy shop.

I hope you guys enjoy this design as much as I have. I already have about five more color combos picked out. I am so excited. Happy Beading!

New Design – The Demoiselle Bracelet

Hello, my dears!

It’s no secret that I love all these new bead designs. While I understand the frustration of keeping up with all these new beads, it’s pure fun for a designer like me to play around with new shapes and hole placements. It’s like a kid getting a new lego set – so many brand new possibilities!

I do really enjoy it, however, when I can work up a design that allows for multiple new beads to be used (double-dipping patterns, if you will). My Follow the Rulla Brick Road design is an example of this, since it works with both Rulla and Brick beads. It doubles the chance that the customer might already have the necessary beads in their stash.

Well, my Demoiselle bracelet is another example of one of these double-dipping patterns!

DSC01394

My Demoiselle bracelets can be made using either Honeycomb beads by the Beadsmith or DiscDuos by Potomac Bead Company. They work up with slightly different embellishment beads, but the same basic technique. It’s somewhere between a beginner and intermediate beadweaving design, great for expanding your repertoire or learning a quick, no-pressure technique.

DSC01400 DSC01408

After doing some super delicate and big, bold designs lately (I’m looking at you, Dragon Blossom and Barcelona designs!), it is really nice to have a design that’s so casual and wearable. No dainty blossoms or giant stones with this one, just smooth beads and endless color combinations!

DSC01399

So, what do you guys think? Drowning in too many two-hole options or are you excited to play with new shapes? I think it’s a wee bit obvious that I am having just too much fun with them!

Sam’s Guide to Audio Books

Hello, everyone!

So, at the beginning of the year I wrote a blog post about my resolutions for the year, one of which was a reading goal of 125 books for the year. Whenever this comes up in conversation, people look at my as if I have lost my mind because, to be fair, that’s a lot of books.

I love me some graphic novels!

Although, your book count tends to climb when you read as many comic books as I do.

My secret weapon that consistently allows me to read over 100 books a year is pretty simple – free audio books.

I am lucky enough to have a job that allows me to listen to my iPod throughout the day. (In case you didn’t know, I work for Beads Direct USA. If you order from us, I’ll probably be the one sending out your new beads!) My boss knows that packaging beads and mailing orders all day can get a wee bit monotonous and doesn’t mind if I slip in an earbud to help keep my mind active.

What I have discovered while listening to books at work is that having a story playing in one ear helps me focus and I have carried that knowledge over into my beading at home. I love having books playing  while I work on new patterns or tackle a repetitive stitch.

The only issue with running through two or three audio books a week is how on earth to pay for them. I don’t know about you, but at $20 or more a book, I can certainly not afford a hundred books a year. And that’s where libraries come in!

If you live in Cincinnati, like me, you can check out the Cincy Library’s website to see what your audio book options are. I use Overdrive to download .mp3 books that I then put on my iPod. If you have a smartphone or tablet, you could also stream books from Hoopla or OneClick. If CD’s are more your style, most library branches have them on site.

So, be sure to check in with your local library to see what they can offer in terms of audible media! Librarians are all trained in digital media these days and will be more than happy to get you reading – no matter the format!

I also like to listen to Podcasts while I work. You can usually subscribe to those for free on iTunes if you use an Apple listening device (like my iPod), but lots of them are available to stream online for free as well. Like riddles and brain teasers? Try giving Ask Me Another a listen. Wanna listen to old radio shows? Radio Lovers has all sorts of goodies online for  free! (I love Bold Ventures and The Whistler, myself)

So, that’s my usual method of finding good stuff to listen to. I am currently going through the Harry Potter books again ( I LOVE Jim Dale’s narration) and having a grand old time. What about you guys? Have you ever given audio books a try while beading? Maybe podcasts? Let me know in the comments!

(Oh, and if you’re on Goodreads, be sure to find and friend me!)

AJE Buried Treasure Reveal

Hello! It is time once again for a blog hop hosted by Art Jewelry Elements! As you remember, I have done two blog hops with them before. One was in August of 2015, when I got to use a component by Suburban Girl Studios and another in January of 2015, when I won a surprise component by Blueberri Beads.

In this challenge, we’re supposed to pillage our stash for art beads that we have been saving and finally USE them. I decided this would be a perfect challenge for the beginning of the new year and signed up.

My first hope was to use this gorgeous lentil bead from Caroline Dewison of Blueberri Beads. I bought it almost a year ago and loved it so much that I was afraid to use it for anything because I was worried I wouldn’t do it justice.

DSC01361

Unfortunately, I was correct. I really don’t like this necklace and I will definitely be cutting it apart to salvage the focal bead. I was trying to channel the inspiration I always get from mixed media designers, but I think it fell a little flat. The pendant stitching and the fabric necklace just don’t blend.

DSC01360

Then, I realized that I needed to stick to my strengths and do some bead weaving. First, I stitched some flowers and attached these lovely faceted ceramic drops by Gaea.

I was much happier with these and decided to try again with some fancy drops from Elizabeth Girod of Fire and Fibers. I loved the colors in these and tried to compliment them with a beaded bead.

I was very pleased with both my sets of earrings and am sure I will eventually find a way to use that gorgeous lentil bead. I just need to remember that inspiration is wonderful, but it’s important to use your talents and not abandon your strengths.

Thanks for the inspiring challenge, AJE! Now, you should all go through these links to see what everybody else made!

2016: Pantone, What are You Doing?

Last year, I fell absolutely in love with the Pantone Color of the Year – Marsala.

I mean, come on. Is that not GORGEOUS? I want it in a lipstick and nail polish and possibly all of my clothes. I love it.

So, I was really excited to see what Pantone came up with for 2016 and was horrified to see this nonsense.

A gradient of my two least favorite colors ever. *sigh*

Why, Pantone. WHY?

Like, a pink that cool is going to look bad on 90% of skin tones and that weird blue is impossible to work with. I mean, it’s just baby pink and baby blue. Anything made in these colors is just going to scream baby shower.

Supposedly, Pantone says that this blend “challenges traditional perceptions of color association” and celebrates the “gender blur as it relates to fashion”. And, like, I am all for gender blur and androgyny and progessive gender politics. I think destroying gender norms in fashion is awesome, but who decided to represent this change by picking the two colors that most represent the gender binary???

Ugh. I could rant about that alone for multiple blog posts, but I digress.

I must say, I do like a bunch of other colors in the Pantone 2016 Spring Report.

Honestly, I really like every single color in this palette besides Pink Quartz and Serenity.

The Iced Coffee, Buttercup, Lilac Gray, and Peach Echo are definitely right up my alley.

Fiesta and Green Flash and the two blues aren’t my go-to colors, but are challenging and still pretty.

Of course, the Pantone color choices literally do not matter for any reason. But it is fun to gawk at them and compare your reactions to your friends.

So, what do you guys think? Am I completely wrong about the weird color blend monstrosity that is Rose Quartz and Serenity?

New-ish Pattern – Dragon Blossom Bracelet!

So… This is a bit late. I actually first made this pattern public in November, but I didn’t want the post to conflict with my big Time to Stitch Reveal and my Black Friday sale post. So, I decided to save the new design for December… and then didn’t post it. Oops.

So, here it is, friends! My Dragon Blossom Bracelet!

DSC01248

The most popular scheme was definitely the Christmas-y Poinsettia color scheme, but it’s a versatile enough pattern to go super casual or pretty and floral.

DSC01237 DSC01239 DSC01241 DSC01242 DSC01273 DSC01272

Besides bracelets, there are a few ways to do earrings.

DSC01220 DSC01267

Most fun for me, was the discovery that I can make rings with this pattern as well! I’ve never designed a ring, so this was really exciting!

DSC01282

This pattern uses two specialty beads – Dragon Scales and Half Tilas. I haven’t designed with either of them before, but I really enjoyed working with them. The Dragon Scales are really gentle and dainty and the Half-Tila’s are much more sharp and precise than the Czechmate Bricks I have worked with in the past.

I really enjoyed making this pattern and am looking forward to doing more with them. Now, I just really wish they would make the Dragon Scale beads in their White Luster finish. I want to make a water lily bracelet.

New Years Resolutions

Hello, everyone!

I know it’s over a week into the new year, but this is my first day off, so I decided to write about my New Years Resolutions for this year!

1. Read 125 Books in 2016.

This is only tangentially related to beading, since I listen to LOTS of audio books while beading and while working at Beads Direct USA. I’ve been setting myself reading goals for the last few years and have managed t surpass them every time, so the goal is going up again this year. I have  added a little Goodreads widget to the right side of my blog, so feel free to click through that if you wanna see what I’ve been reading or want to “friend” me on Goodreads. I try to review everything I read, so I am pretty active on there and love getting new book friends.

Click me to see Sam’s Goodreads Profile!

2. Complete the Year of Jewelry Project on Facebook

Last year was my first attempt at participating in the Year of Jewelry Project on Facebook. We were given different themes for every week and then expected to load pictures of a piece of jewelry we had made. I did manage to get a picture up for every week of 2015, but some of them were late and a lot of them didn’t really fit the theme.

This year, all of our themes are going to be colors, which I think will be easier for me. It’s really nice to have the added motivation to finish and photograph a piece each week, so I am looking forward to that! Registration is still open for a few more days, if you want to join me!

Click me to go to the YOJP page to sign up!

3. Blog at least Twice a Month

So… You guys may have notice that I am not the most reliable blogger on the internet. I went from posting, like, four or five times on January of last year, to not posting at all in December. It’s not that I don’t have plenty of wonderful beady news to share with you guys, I just never seem to sit down and actually write the posts, which is silly, since my posts are usually under 500 words. I used to be able to do that in half an hour when I was in school.

So, this year I promise to update this blog at least twice a month. If that works out, maybe I will increase the frequency for 2017! ( If you guys still find me at all interesting by then, of course. ;) )

4. Finish this Purse

You guys may remember that I made this purse for the Time to Stitch 8 Blog Hop back in November.

DSC01070

The structure of the thing is done, but I still need to add straps and figure out my embellishments and if I was some sort of top closure flap thing. I set it down after the blog hop reveal and never picked it back up, so I promise to finish that this year.

5. Try More New Beads!

Last, but not least, I want to continue trying out new bead shapes! I recently got a whole bunch of weird shapes from Potomac Bead Company that I want to play with and more ridiculous and new beads seem to come out every day. Stay tuned to watch me by flummoxed by them .

So, what about you guys? Have any beady resolutions for 2016? Any non-beady resolutions? Hate the idea of resolutions in general? Let me know in the comments! I love hearing from you guys.

And of course, Happy New Year!

It’s that Time Again!

Hello, my lovelies!

I hope all my US friends are enjoying their Thanksgiving feasts (I expect that by the end of the day, I will personally be at least 75% pie). For my dear friends in less pie-obsessed countries, I hope you are having a fabulous Thursday.

It is Black Friday weekend again and there are enough sales to make your head spin. Lucky for you guys, mine is pretty simple.

25% OFF EVERYTHING

black friday ad - 2015 copy

That’s right! Everything in my E shop is now 25% off. That includes both finished jewelry AND  patterns, so now is the time to stock up!

To get the discount, you will need to use the coupon code “handmadeholiday” (all one word) during checkout. After you add the items you want to the cart, click on your cart, and you should see a little line saying “Apply Coupon Code”. It can be hard to see, so I took a screen shot.

I blurred out the details for privacy, but that little heart Pendant is from THEAelements on etsy and she does lovely work.

Now, what is also nice about patterns is that they can’t go out of stock, so there is NO rush to take time away from family to peruse my shop. The sale is going to go all the way through Cyber Monday, so you will have plenty of time to scroll and shop, and see what interests you. No mad lines and doorway danger at my shop! Haha.

Enjoy your holidays and your weekend, everyone! And, as always, Happy Beading!
